Paul and Valentine had an attempted robbery last night, thankfully they were sleeping in their van. They are leaving because they go further north to Cairns. We go to the mall is closed because of the Australian day, a holiday that commemorates the arrival of the first whites who settled, it's more an excuse for a holiday in fact. So we roll this time southwards towards Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. We stop a few miles before Airlie Beach to eat. Just at sunset the sun, a veritable invasion of mosquitoes hit on us and forced us back on the road at night. I even spent the night in the tent, near the marshes as part of Queensland is under water due to rain
Tuesday, January 29, sunny
We arrived in Airlie Beach, as all along the coast the Great Barrier Reef, from October to March can not swim in the sea because of jellyfish. So there is a huge pool in Airlie Beach (1500 m3).
Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsunday Island. The Whitsunday Islands are a small archipelago of 76 islands between the coast and the Barrier Reef. It was James Cook who christened them as well. James Cook is the character of Australia, unlike what you say, is not he who discovered Australia. But he contributed greatly to the exploration of Australia. It was he who, by making the complete tour boat has proved that Australia is indeed an island. For the record, Whitsunday Pentecost means in English (in fact it is a synonym of Pentecost), and when Cook arrived on Whitsunday Island, he thought it was Pentecost, in fact he was off by a day by forgetting to count the line of date change.
short, we are really interested to go to these islands, we decided to book a tour for a day. For $ 103 we will go on Whiteheaven beach, we'll do the diving and snorkeling a short walk on an island. So we go tomorrow at 9am, we are still quite worried about time. Personally I have not seen a drop of water falling from the sky since mid-December.
We return to the pool and then we go to bed
We go the mainland, there are many beautiful small islands, too bad it rained.
Finally we reach the first spot, diving masks and snorkels We put on without forgetting the combination anti-jellyfish and after a dive boat from the Cousteau, we are in the beautiful seabed
... Unfortunately I can not share images of aquatic life of the coral reef but it is absolutely gorgeous (though Sean m 'had given his disposable camera underwater, so you'll surely get to see these photos on my return).
But without you lie about it like this ...
We're all amazed by the beauty of these fish, the corals of many colors ...
We went to the second spot for diving, it's really beautiful.
Then we took our meals on the beach Whitheaven, range up to 97% of white silica. The sand on the beach is so pure that it was used for the construction the lens of the Hubble telescope. Another beach ranked in the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world (some say the finest in the world ...).
We take the boat to tour the island and take a short walk to the lookout, and thus enjoy this beach from above ...
A frog in Mackay ...
Thursday, January 31, rain
We want to walk in Mackay but once we start the car (still with that horrible noise), the rain falls on us, true tropical rain. Queensland the sunshine state but not in the wet season ...
It is more than 30 ° C with a humidity near 100%
We drive and we stop when we do not cut the ignition of the Falcon. Rockampton reached, what we buy renew our stocks of food and how to refuel. Then suddenly louder starter, still a mystery to the mechanics. We drive up to Seventeen Seventy-yes, 1770 is the name of an Australian village. This village was built by James Cook in 1770 (normal), it is also the most surf spot north of the East Coast.
Friday 1 st February , cloudy
It stopped raining, we take the opportunity to go to Agnes Water for surfing (Valentin has kindly lent his surfboard when we crossed in Townsville).
What? A small demonstration? Ok ...
Lie on the board, so finding the right balance (not too far behind if the board will swing back when the wave comes and not too forward to not sink into water).
Once the wave approaches you, rowing in the same direction as the wave to reach a speed close to hers.
Mount standing as soon as possible on the board without the help of the knees. And that's it
We take the road then ever southward towards Hervey Bay.
Saturday, February 2, cloudy
We arrived in Hervey Bay, Floppy and I are really interested to go to Fraser Island. PA and Mick have a budget just a bit after their trip to New Zealand, they only continue the road tomorrow and will join us on our return. By learning about good deals, we finally you start know now, we find a backpaker where you can rent a 4x4 9 on the island for three days with gasoline, boat trip, camping equipment provided for $ 180. Fraser Island is a sand island, there are no paved roads and so it is allowed to go on the island if it has a 4x4. The island was discovered by James Cook (again!). Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world with 120km long and about twenty wide. Nobody lives there, there are only a small station that sells gasoline and some gadgets to tourists. We take of backapker (hostel) to do our laundry and take our shower. Tomorrow we get up at 6am because we need to watch a video on driving in 4x4 on Fraser Island and another video on the island itself.
