Hello,
One fine morning in late March, Algieba was returned to the water, all dapper and clean hull, happy to find his element (the owners for that matter).
It has remained to be done a great cleaning of the interior and deck because there was a lot of dust on site.
We then enjoyed a windless day to reinstall the sails slept since November in a cab, it's better a sailboat with its sails!
We had barely finished when a young man hailed me from the dock, there are three big fellows and ask if they can climb aboard to visit ... Firstly a little taken aback, before we accept the air sympathetic these young people then we start to talk in English, they are very interested and also surprised at what we do, they ask us many questions!
In turn, we ask them questions and learn that they are all three students in Madrid, Francisco was born in San Jose, Costa Rica, Cesar Santiago and Chilean Rene is from Mexico. They are studying sports psychology and visiting Sardinia for a week of vacation.
We liked this (too) short meeting because they have to leave for Madrid Jertzu Cagliari and then the next day ... Bye Bye
We also sympathized with Talla, a Senegalese who sells trinkets near the supermarket where we have our habits. He sold me a watch (not expensive) but it does not work ... Finally, I will exchange against one that works! A pretty old
schooner docked not far from us, a crewman remained on board to polish the varnish, paints and Indi ... His name is Sri Lankan, very friendly and smiling. It is my intention to visit this boat built in San Diego (California) in 1934 and belonging to an Italian from Padua who has bought an American. The schooner called
Orsagrassa and measuring 18m long, it really is a beautiful boat, with fine lacquer cubbyholes, beautiful cabin owner a square equipped with comfortable bunks, a beautiful sheltered space navigation etc. ... It's all class but not flashy and made for the sea!
we are watching the weather is very unstable and in the meantime, we continue our bike rides among the orange blossoms that perfume mmm! A final harvest of lawyers and a window appears, therefore, we will leave April 19.
April 19 to 21 - Arbatax - Marsala (Sicily) - 190 000
Arbatax is left in the wake of Monday 19 afternoon in good weather and good sea breeze which makes us sail upwind at a good pace. Shortly thereafter, the breeze strengthens and we send the staysail instead of the genoa, Algieba feasts and is progressing well on the sea dotted with white sheep, though it lacks 20 degrees to the right course. By winning
seaward breeze decreases but we can always make good road, and then in the evening, the wind switches to the west and becomes healthy. The forecast
10/12 knots but the wind gets up to 22h at 25 knots and continues until about 2am as he goes down to 15 knots. The consequence of forming a messy seas with big waves and the night is very, very uncomfortable. We must cling to the inside the vessel suffered severe battering.
The sailor is sick and I have to take a quarter to 4 o'clock, just as he found some strength to enable me to rest.
gradually wind down but the sea is still rough, this decline only very slowly, luckily the sky is blue and the sun is shining ... We met a turtle that passes close to the boat, it is about forty centimeters and follows its merry way by swimming slowly. We shall see but few others later.
Later a dozen dolphins come to visit us and three of them will be with us a long time playing with the bow of the boat ... We do get tired of it!
The wind has dropped considerably and by late morning, we put the engine to move on.
The day passes quickly and there again at night, always the engine ... We walk quietly because I do not happen overnight.
And voila! Captain's turn to be floored by a severe migraine in the early evening ... Seals and 3 hours of rest before you take my shift, fortunately, the sailor is in shape!
The night is quiet and at dawn, we double the first Egadi Islands (Agathe), we follow this group of islands and perceive Jetty port of Marsala around 8am. We will do our entry at 9am, not knowing where to dock, then a marinero beckons ... must pass between the buoys and moorings moor forward to one of them and come to the the back of a pontoon boat ... Explanations in Italian, gesticulating ... We do not understand anything ... and the maneuver is missed! We have to take 2 times before arriving there. Fortunately
the welcome is friendly!
The Sicilian marinas have a reputation for being dirty and uncomfortable, it is almost clean, sanitary, located precast in a very rustic to say the least, the shower works! And it's not too expensive.
We went down south and the temperature in this wonderful day, rose (26 °).
We'll go downtown in the afternoon to stretch our legs, the city of Marsala is pretty and nice, the old city is perhaps a little too freshly restored but we can admire the beautiful buildings and is good to walk in the streets.
The next day, unstable weather requires, that the Sirocco, 35 knots, and provides for at least 2 days ... It is better in the port of Marsala ... And then he'll have to taste this famous wine!
soon for other impressions
